Lewisham High Street from the Campanile, looking north, 1938

The archive of stories and images presented here, constitute 'The heart of Lewisham' exhibition which was the result of a wide ranging reminiscence project conducted with care settings, Lewisham citizens and schools across the borough between December 2003 and April 2004. The exhibition is currently on tour throughout the borough.

Recorded group and individual interviews were transcribed and edited for use in the exhibition, and in many cases interviewees also contributed personal photographs to help illustrate their experience of growing up and living in Lewisham during the early and mid 20th Century.

Memories shared through the project often focused on the commercial spine of the borough, from Loampit Hill through Lewisham High Street, Ladywell and Rushey Green to Catford. At the heart of the exhibition lie memories of childhood, grandparents, streetsellers dancing days and cinema.

For those working on the project it was apparent that Lewisham has a rich social and cultural history which is preserved in the diverse memories of its citizens. The exhibition is a reflection of their personal experience of life in the borough during the early and mid 20th Century.

We would like to thank all the interviewees for their generosity in sharing their life stories and in working with Age Exchange project workers to help create an exhibition celebrating and commemorating life in the borough.

In addition to the exhibition, artists were commissioned by Age Exchange and Urban Renaissance Lewisham to produce reminiscence-based artwork in response to their interactions with Lewisham residents, throughout the project.
