Open Up a World of Living History

Intergenerational Workshops targeting
History and Citizenship for key Stages 1& 2

Age Exchange is a leading charity in the field of reminiscence, and has extensive experience of working collaboratively and running successful projects. We work across education, health and the arts, in London and across the UK.

A workshop for key stage 1 lasts about an hour. Popular themes for this stage include toys, special objects including domestic appliances and going to the seaside.

Key stage 2 workshops are longer and last about 90 minutes. Popular themes at this stage include WW2, Evacuation, The changing role of women and changes in the home.

Workshops can take place either in your own school or in the Reminiscence Centre in Blackheath. A visit to our centre will also provide resources for Unit 9gen: Visiting a museum, gallery or site.

You may wish to visit our reminiscence centre beforehand where we would be pleased to give you a tour.

The workshops will include:
  • Drama-based workshops exploring memory through movement.
  • Face-to-face reminiscence work with trained elders exploring themesfrom the National Curriculum – Empire to Commonwealth; The Birth of theNational Health Service; The Changing Role of Women; and London at War.
  • Stimuli for creative writing, visual arts, documentary radio – inspiredby reminiscence and access to period artefacts, archive sound and film.

Age Exchange workshops combine first hand reminiscence by older people with role play, the handling of period artefacts and the use of sound archive material. These workshops give your staff and pupils participation in heritage arts and documentary workshops which will support you in your teaching of the core subjects next year.
