‘Old-time Newtown’

Age Exchange has been commissioned by the Highgate Newtown Community Centre to run a reminiscence project exploring memories of this unique historical area, with the focus being 1920 to 1980. Highgate Newtown encompasses 3 distinct models of social housing from late Victorian through to the award winning estate built in the early 1970s. Age Exchange will be running reminiscence sessions with elders, conducting recorded interviews, supporting a programme of intergenerational workshops and finally collating material for the production of a DVD and exhibition based on local people’s experience of Highgate Newtown.  The aims of the project identified by the community centre are to increase the involvement of older people in the community and enable them to build intergenerational bridges with young people through their participation in workshops at local schools and youth centers. The overall focus of the project is to promote a sense of community history and identity.
