A European Reminiscence Symposium:
"Making Memories Matter - Reminiscence, Reconciliation and Resolution"
A symposium examining and celebrating the creative use of reminiscence as a means to international understanding and personal reflection and resuolution.

Daily Schedule:

Wednesday 25th May

10:30

Intergenerational theatre performance involving local school children
at Blackheath Halls - 2 minutes walk from Age Exchange.

Children from John Ball, Brooklands and Wingfield Primary Schools are working with older people from Britain, China and Nigeria. Together they will create three short pieces of theatre based on the memories of the older people and the themes explored in their Memory Boxes.


12:00 onwards Visit the Memory Box Exhibition in the Reminiscence Centre and meet some of the artists from European countries who have participated in the project.

14:00-17:00 Guided Walk, optional trip to Greenwich and visit to National Maritime Museum.

10:45 Marian Liebmann, editor of Arts Approaches to Conflict talks about her use of practical art exercises to gain insights into different aspects of conflict, conflict resolution & mediation.

11:15 Gaynor Kavanagh, author of Dream Spaces: Memory and the Museum and lecturer in Museum Studies at the University of Southampton.

Personal memories in a public context: the museum exhibition as a medium of exchange and communication.

12:00 Faith Gibson, Emeritus Professor of Social Work, University of Ulster.

Making Memory Boxes: a tangible record and a means of personal resolution.

12:30 Angelika Trilling, responsible for development of older people's services in the City of Kassel on introducing reminiscence in a variety of local authority settings.

Afternoon Workshops

14:00-15:00

Sarah Worthington
from Columbus Ohio, Director of Footsteps of the Elders leads a workshop on making theatre from memories.

15:15-16:15 Lotta Petronella, Finnish film maker and artist, together with other artists from the Making Memories Matter Project, on taking responsibility for visual representations of memories.

16:15 Tea

16:45-17:45 Vasilica Stamatin from Romania, actress in the National Theatre of Romania in Cluj, on using reminiscence and theatre to resolve painful memories.

18:00 Drinks

18:30-19:30 Good Companions performance, discussion and short film.

19:30 Supper, Indian meal and alternative menu.


Friday 27th May at Blackheath Halls

10:00-10:30

Geoffrey Brown, Director of Euclid, Cultural Contact Point in Britain for the European Commission on the value of inter-cultural and international co-operation.

10:30-11:00 Peter Coleman, Professor of Psychogerontology, University of Southampton, author of Ageing and Development: Theories and Research speaks on international reminiscence exchanges.

11:15-11:45 Presentation by visiting speakers from Germany and Finland.

11:45-12:15 Joanna Bornat, Professor of Oral History, Faculty of Health and Social Care, Open University, on the role of artefacts in older life, incorporating reflections on the Making Memories Matter exhibition.

12:15-12:45 Dr. Harry Derbyshire, Lecturer in Drama, University of Greenwich, interviews Pam Schweitzer about her reminiscence work as Artistic Director of Age Exchange 1983 - 2005.

13:00 Lunch

Afternoon Workshops

14:00-15:30

Pam Schweitzer
, Artistic Director of Age Exchange and Co-ordinator of the European Reminiscence Network leads a workshop on the Making Memories Matter project, supported by artists and older people from the Memory Boxes project.

15:30-17:00 Peggy Pettit, performance artist from New York on the power of reminiscence arts to build personal confidence and community health.

17:00-18:00 Plenary Session

The cost of the Symposium is £50 / £40 (concession) per person

Please note that places are limited so it is advisable to reserve and confirm your booking as soon as possible. Cheques should be made out to Age Exchange or payment can be by credit/debit card. You will receive confirmation of your booking within a week of your booking.

Accommodation is not included in the price, but we can supply details of local hotels and bed and breakfast places at a concessionary rate.

Lunch and supper on the Thursday and lunch on the Friday are included in the price. Blackheath also has a large selection of cafes and restaurants.
