Update – 2nd January 2009

Centre Events

Our programme of Reminiscence Centre activities is well underway with a rich variety of events on offer. So far we have run -
  • 3 film club presentations on Peter Sellers, the First World War and Charles Dickens on Film
  • 3 tea dances
  • 2 reminiscence sessions on Entertainment and Keeping Warm in Winter
  • a tribute to George Formby with Mark Walsh
After the presentation on film adaptations of Dickens novels (attended by 31 people), we had a lively discussion with the audience on favourite scenes from films, memorable performances, the best Dickensian actors and comparisons between old and new adaptations. The Centre Events programme is available on request with details of all forthcoming events.

Outreach Projects

At the Cherry Orchard Nursing home in Becontree the group worked towards Christmas by making decorations and sharing memories about Christmases from their youth and early adulthood. When we actually sat around the Christmas tree and decorated it, it really did help to reawake memories and open up conversation.

At the Dorado Day Centre at Time Court in Woolwich, we have worked with the African and Caribbean elders’ group to recreate a very different kind of Christmas experience from the traditional British one. Christmas in the Caribbean or in Nigeria involved sunshine, hot weather, summer clothing, nice cold drinks and ice cream and partying and dancing outdoors: such a contrast to the freezing temperatures and the need for heavy warm clothing over here. We are looking with the group at ways we can make a short dramatic piece of entertainment exploring these contrasting experiences.

We are soon to commence two other projects at the Pullen Day Centre in Pimlico and the Bromley MIND Day Care Centre in Beckenham.

We are also running occasional reminiscence sessions in dementia care and carers’ cafes around London. So far we have worked with the Greenwich and Lewisham Crossroads carers’ café in Catford and the Healthy Ageing Café in Bermondsey.

We have appointed our project worker team and filmmakers for the Creative Arts Residency and the Intergenerational theatre project. The venues are to be finalised in the next month. More news about those projects in the next website update.
