PARTNERSHIP WITH ROYAL HOLLOWAY
UNIVERSITY OF LONDON

Age Exchange is delighted to be working with students from Royal Holloway, University of London, currently studying for a BA Drama module in "Performance of Memory". The course convenor and tutor is Dr Helen Nicholson, who specialises in applied theatre www.rhul.ac.uk/drama

"Performance of Memory" aims to introduce students to the significance of individual and collective memory through experiencing work with older people in community contexts and care settings. The focus of the course is to encourage students to become practitioners in reminiscence theatre, and to understand the processes of working by integrating theory and practice. It is funded by LCACE.

Age Exchange at City Hall
Beaumont Estate

LONDON & QUADRANT

Age Exchange has recently started a new partnership project with London & Quadrant Housing Trust in Waltham Forest. The area around the Beaumont Estate has in the past suffered from acute deprivation but is now undergoing important new regeneration and housing development. Age Exchange project workers are working with elders from Albany and Suffolk Courts to explore their memories of the local area over 50 years, as well as to encourage them to reflect on their hopes for the future of the locality and its people. Parallel sessions with young people from the Beaumont Estate will encourage participants to engage with the wider community and share memories and cultural stories as part of the overall project. The objective is to encourage young and old to feel valued and integral to the future of the estate and community, to encourage social interaction and raise levels of self-esteem and confidence. Reminiscence of personal and cultural experience will be recorded and explored creatively through film, and exhibition, to celebrate diversity and change.

The project has been run and coordinated by Momentum Arts , for whom Age Exchange is now creating the Untold Stories educational website.

During the last 12 months, Age Exchange has also provided Momentum Arts with training and consultancy.

CREATIVE AGEING IN LONDON

Funding from the City Bridge Trust for reminiscence projects with older people in residential care.

Creative Ageing is a one-year integrated programme of reminiscence activities, involving five reminiscence arts projects, a Creative Arts Residency leading to a community theatre production, cultural events at the Reminiscence Centre and an end-of-year seminar for practitioners and managers of services. We successfully piloted this project model for the Department of Health in Somerset, West Yorkshire and Norfolk, and now with the support of the City Bridge Trust, we are able to deliver it in London.

Age Exchange at the Integrating Generations Conference, Warsaw, Poland April 2007

INTEGRATING GENERATIONS

In April 2007, Age Exchange was invited by The Academy for the Development of Philanthropy in Poland to give a presentation on intergenerational practice and projects at the 'Integrating Generations' conference in Warsaw, Poland.

This was a highly successful event which has resulted in a return visit this July to meet with organisations interested in working in partnership with Age Exchange on intergenerational projects in Poland.

MEMORY MAKERS

Older People’s Theatre

Every Wednesday The Memory Makers meet at Age Exchange to rehearse. The group is currently working with David Savill and Malcolm Jones to create a new reminiscence theatre production. ‘Starting Over’ is based on the group’s memories of rebuilding their lives in London after the Second World War. The play is set between 1945 and the opening of the Festival of Britain in 1951. The play will tour care settings, small scale theatres and also play at the newly refurbished Royal Festival Hall. Should you wish to book the production please contact Suzanne Lockett or Malcolm Jones at Age Exchange.

Archive news

Age Exchange has now completed the final element of its national project on the wartime Merchant Navy, 'Cruel Sea'. Archives containing 50 filmed interviews with veterans on DVD, as well as transcribed interviews and exhibition text, have been presnted to:

The British Empire & Commonwealth Museum - Bristol
The Discovery Museum - Newcastle
Living History North East - Sunderland
The Merseyside Maritime Museum - Liverpool

The 'Cruel Sea' archive stands as an important resource. It will be made accessable in each venue to the general public.
